Structure:
- Materials: Dimensional lumber, standard hardware, IBC tanks
- Fabrication: 3 precisely drilled holes per beam
- Design: NASA-inspired scissor mechanism for rapid deployment
- Assembly: Parallel "swarm" construction capability
Materials & Sourcing
The structure uses cheap, widely available materials that can be sourced new or used:
- Lumber: Standard dimensional lumber (2x4s, etc.)
- Hardware: Common bolts, nuts, washers
- Tanks: IBC (Intermediate Bulk Container) tanks for water storage/ballast
- Solar Panels: Reclaimed/decommissioned panels widely available
Build Process
The StarShade is designed for simple, rapid construction:
- Each beam requires only 3 precisely drilled holes
- Enables parallel fabrication ("swarm construction")
- Minimal on-site assembly required
- Scissor mechanism allows quick deployment and breakdown
Energy Applications
StarShade can power various off-grid applications:
- Event operations (replacing diesel generators)
- LED path lighting (600'+ coverage)
- Radio repeaters and communications
- Public device charging stations
- Electric vehicle charging (golf carts, e-bikes)
- Art installations and theme camps
Sustainability Features
- Zero emissions during operation
- Uses reclaimed solar panels (circular economy)
- Replaces fossil fuel generators
- Educational platform for renewable energy
- Modular design for future expansion
